To set up reading filters go here and click on "new" to create a new reading filter. A pop-up window will show up asking what to name the filter, name it.
Then all of your subscriptions will show up and you simply click on the ones you would like to add to the filter, use ctrl to choose more than one. Click add, and they will be added to your reading filter. They are automatically saved after 5 seconds. You can further customize each subscription by clicking on it.
To read your reading filters, at this time you will have to add them to your link list or a sticky entry. They haven't been added to the styles or the navigation thingy at the top. The format is http://username.dreamwidth.org/read/filtername
As for how to categorize your subscriptions, that all depends on you. I have created them for layouts, icons, and crafty things. I don't have reading filters for people, since I don't have many friends and not everyone updates at the same time, so I don't see the point for that for myself, yet. It has been helpful with handling communities and feeds. YMMV. :D

Hopefully this helped.
